Then they removed all affected drywall in the corner and behind the cabinet, performed a mold scrub as needed, extracted standing water in the wall cavity track, HEPA vacuumed the entire contained area, and spray with anti-microbial. SERVPRO wants its city to be well-prepared for anything!
SERVPRO of Southwest Portland wanted to take the time out to make sure the city we love, Portland is prepared for any and all mold losses. Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment in fact over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified. Fungi produce some very useful results. Yeast is a type of fungi used in preparing bread, baked goods, and other food products, including some alcoholic beverages. The unique flavor of blue cheese is a result of mold, an edible mushroom is simply a type of fungi and lifesaving penicillin is a product of mold.
Even though some forms of mold can add value to our lives, other forms can be harmful. Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds may present health concerns for some people. Health concerns may arise when excessive mold grows indoors. Concerns are more likely to rise for “at risk” people, which might include immune suppressed or compromised individuals, young children, and individuals with chronic inflammatory lung diseases such as asthma and severe allergies, However, anyone may experience health problems associated with exposure to mold in damp buildings. Possible health effects include runny nose, sneezing, coughing, aggravation of asthma, sore throat, or inflammation of the sinuses.
The individuals most likely at risk are infants or children, pregnant women, the elderly, people with compromised respiratory systems or asthma and allergies, and people with weakened immune systems. SERVPRO of Southwest Portland professionals can give you peace of mind by helping make it “Like it never even happened." SERVPRO is just a call away!
SERVPRO of Southwest Portland received a call from a local hospital regarding a mold loss in the kitchen area. During the call, it was explained to us that during meal preparation last week one of the cooks knocked over the fire extinguisher. It continued to spray and get all over the grill.
SERVPRO of Southwest Portland sent out our crew to the hospital with all the equipment to get the job done. Once we arrived we did an initial walk-through with the facilities manager once he took apart the grill it was apparent that there was a strong mold smell. The mold was all over the grill on the outside and in between some of the drawers.
Our crew chief got to work coming up with a plan to best remove mold and get this grill back up to working to feed the hospital's employees and their patients. Our crew was able to move the grill to a back area to make sure we can remove all the mold and make sure it doesn't get anywhere else in the kitchen.
Due to how easy mold can spread. SERVPRO of Southwest Portland used concrobium mold control which is an EPA-registered solution that remediates and prevents mold without any harmful chemicals. Concrobium dries to form an invisible antimicrobial shield that encapsulates and physically crushes mold spores. We were able to clean and remove the mold in only one day in order to get the kitchen's grill back up and running for everyone who depends on it!

Within 15 minutes of the call ending, we sent out our crew of well-trained professionals to the scene. After the initial walk-through with the owner, it was apparent that there were more than 10 square feet of mold. Our crew then began to come up with a drying plan, the drying plan is to set containment in both the bedroom and the living room. We then needed to remove the carpet and perform a flood cut to the drywall in the bedroom and the living room. Lastly, we needed to mold scrub and HEPA vacuum the entire containment in both rooms, and place drying equipment in those affected areas.

Once demolition took place we were able to see the full spread of the mold.
SERVPRO of Southwest Portland received an after-hour call regarding a water loss in a local home. The homeowner let us know that there is a possible mold issue in his furnace room and a possible laundry room caused by a leaking humidifier attached to his furnace. The homeowner also mentioned that they live in a three-story home and he believes that two of the levels may be affected.
Either 20 minutes of that call ends, our crews came to the shop regrouped, and headed out to the home. During the initial walk-through between the homeowner and the crew, our crew chief noticed that the HVAC was improperly installed which is the reason for the loss. In addition, the humidifier was spraying into the bottom of the furnace causing the flooring in the HVAC and laundry room to get wet. The homeowner came home after a 2-week vacation to the cork laminator tiles being swollen and coming up in the HVAC room and separated in front of the washer machine in the laundry room.
Our crew chief then comes up with a drying plan. The plan was to set containment on the doorways of the HVAC room and laundry room and to set one air scrubber in each of the affected rooms. Then we needed to remove the cork laminate flooring to expose the microbial growth and then perform mold scrub on the subfloor and flood cut the walls that have the microbial growth in the rooms.
Our crew was able to get this job done in only three days. We set containment on the vaults in order to help speed up the drying process
SERVPRO of Southwest Portland received an early morning call about a water loss that turned into mold growth in a local business in the Portland area. The owner told us that there was a third-party water leak that leaked into 3 of their vaults and they were starting to notice a smell and opened up the vault to see mold.
Within 20 minutes of the call ending our crew loaded up the truck and arrived on the scene. During the initial walk-through with the owner, it was obvious that the mold smell was very strong. In addition, the owner told us that they would want us to do whatever we could to clean the contents that were affected.
Our crew chief then came up with a plan in order to get the vaults cleaned and back to preloss conditions as soon as possible. We needed a couple of air movers and containment to help dry the vaults and the contents. We loaded up the vaults and headed back to the warehouse.
There is where we noticed that the blankets were too wet and would need to be replaced. Unfortunately during cleaning out the contents we needed to replace 5 small boxes, 3 medium boxes, and change out 15 damp moving blankets. We were able to have the vaults cleaned and dried in only two days.

Containment is set up to contain heat in that certain location of the home.
SERVPRO of Southwest Portland receives a call regarding a customer smelling mold in their crawlspace were weeks ago they had water down there that caused the mold. The water got into the crawl space because a pipe had burst and that caused the mold to grow at a rapid rate. The customer mentioned that the smell was so strong that the industrial hygienists told the homeowner that they were living in an unsafe situation causing the homeowner to leave their home while we worked.
As promised, our crew was out to the home within the hour of the call ending. During the initial inspection the drying plan was created it was going to be an all hands on deck kind of job. Our crew needed to set containment in the coat closet for crawlspace access, set air scrubber, in addition to all flex ducting and isolation needed to be removed from metal ducting. In the main level of the home, containment was also needed and was outlined in the industrial hygienists’ protocol, also air scrubbers were set in each containment area in order to remove affected drywall and sand any framing that might be stained.
Our crew noticed that demolition was also going to be needed to help with drying. The wet vinyl and underlayment needed to be removed in addition to all water strained drywall in the main level ceiling from previous water damage. While doing the demolition it was noticed that mold spores were noticed throughout the home.

Mold what you need to know.

Mold has attacked this home.
Ascospores are prominent in nature commonly found in the outdoor environment. Some fungi that belong to the Ascomycete family include the sexual forms of Penicillium/Aspergillus, Chaetominum, etc that may be frequently found growing on damp substrates.
Chaetomium are found on a variety of substrates containing cellulose including paper and plant compost. Several species have been reported to play a major role in the decomposition of cellulose-made materials. These fungi are able to dissolve the cellulose fibers in cotton and paper and thus cause the materials to disintegrate. The process is especially rapid under moist conditions. Their Ascospores are brown or gray with one or two germ pores.
Fusarium is a hydrophilic mold that requires very wet conditions and is frequently isolated from plants and grains. They colonize in continuously damp materials such as damp wallboard and water reservoirs for humidifiers and drip pans. Fusarium is commonly found in organic matter such as soil and plants. This infection cannot be transmitted from person to person.
Aspergillus and Penecillium are both types of mold are ubiquitous in the environment. Aspergillus tends to colonize continuously damp materials such as damp wallboard and fabrics. Penicillium is commonly found in house dust, wallpaper, decaying fabrics, moist clipboards, etc.
Stachybotrys is the bad boy of them all
Stachybotrys, commonly called "stachy," is a greenish-black, slimy mold found only on cellulose products (such as wood or paper) that have been wet for several days or more. The mold does not grow on concrete, linoleum or tile. Stachybotrys and some other fungi may produce several chemicals called mycotoxins. Mycotoxins can be present in spores and small mold fragments released into the air. Once the mold fragments, mycotoxins and spores are in the air, individuals may breathe them into their lungs.

How To Remove Mold
1/18/2021 (Permalink)
Let SERVPRO help you with your mold issue.
Every mold damage scenario is different and requires a unique solution, but the general mold remediation process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our “typical” process:
- Emergency Contact - 503-777-9739
The mold cleanup and restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask a series of questions to help us determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel.
- Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment
Local and state laws may require a specific inspection and documentation protocol based on the size of the affected area. We can advise you on this process, providing guidance based on your unique situation.
We carefully inspect your property for visible signs of mold. Mold feeds on cellulose and water and can be hidden from plain view. We use various technologies to detect mold and hidden water sources.
- Mold Containment
Our professionals use various containment procedures to prevent the spread of mold. We may use advanced containment procedures like negative air chambers to isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process. All fans and heating and cooling systems will be turned off to prevent the spread of mold.
- Air Filtration
Our specialized filtration equipment allows our Professionals to capture microscopic mold spores out of the air. We utilize powerful “air scrubbers” and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in process.
- Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials
The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. We’ll use antifungal and antimicrobial treatments to eliminate mold colonies and to help prevent new colonies from forming. It may be necessary to remove and dispose of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and carpeting, to remediate heavy mold growth.
- Cleaning Contents and Belongings
We clean your furniture, decorative items, curtains, clothing, and other restorable items affected by mold. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to clean and disinfect your belongings. We’re also trained to remove odors and deodorization using fogging equipment.
- Restoration
Depending on the level of mold damage, drywall, subfloors, and other building materials may have been removed. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business. The restoration step gets your home or business back to normal.

Let us remove the black mold in your attic.
What you see here is black mold growth in a home's attic. The cause was over time the home's roof has aged, and has small leaks whenever there is moisture outside. With the constant temperate change in the attic and dark atmosphere it's an ideal place for mold to grow. While the attic is not the worst place for mold to grow it still should be removed and taken care of properly. SERVPRO of Southwest Portland was able to come out and clean the mold up in one day's time! The roof was sprayed with a chemical that will prevent mold from growing as fast. Mold damage in a crawlspace pantry
In this carpeted pantry located under the stairs the owner noticed a change in temperature and then the carpet soaked over the next few days. Thinking this was just an exterior temperature change and no water lines or roof parts touching the area, the cause was a little tricky to pinpoint at first. With the closet being filled with items it wasn't until the smell became stronger and stronger over a short period of time that the items were all removed and the source was discovered! An entire case of plastic water bottles in the back of the closet had combusted and spilled water all throughout the carpet. Not knowing this could have been the cause, the water then sat underneath the carpet and created several mold spores. The area was dried out and the mold was completely removed in the baseboards so the carpet could be replaced!

Mold up closet wall
The mold may not always be visible when you first start noticing signs of it in your home. Mold can grow in places like closets that are too cold, underneath your bathroom sink, in your attic, and in the bathroom cabinets. Pay attention to musty odors in your home as well as be on the lookout for mold that is visible. Any past moisture problems you may have had could have caused mold spores to grow and it may have gone undetected. Mold can also grow in areas that you have excessive humidity. There are several ways mold can start growing in your home which includes, but is not limited to plumbing, storm drains, and equipment failures either inside or outside of your house. This is mold that was slowly growing in a bedroom closet that wasn't vented correctly.
