The local home had an electrical fire in the garage.
SERVPRO of Southwest Portland received an emergency call because a local home in the Portland area experienced a fire in their garage. Our crew of well-trained professionals arrived on the scene within a half hour of receiving the call. Upon arrival, it was apparent that a board-up would also be needed due to the fire department cutting a massive hole in the garage door. We told the customer that the plan was to get there and extract as much water as possible and once that's done place equipment to start the drying process.
It was determined that the fire was caused by an electrical issue in the garage. The Firefighters used water to put out the fire causing extensive water damage in the garage, kitchen, living room, and hallway. In addition, the significant smoke damage throughout the entire home and attic. Demolition was needed for this job we needed to remove the kitchen tile flooring and underlayment, cabinets in the kitchen, the living room floor tile in the entry carpet along with the pad, and underlayment, the carpet pad in the hallway and underlayment, and also the drywall and installation in attic.
After the demolition was done we came to the conclusion that the lower cabinets are also affected and the particle board will also be removed in addition to the tile that goes under those cabinets. Our crew brought in dehumidifiers in order to help with the remaining soot and smoke odor the crew could only place two due to the breakers' constantly breaking due to the amount of power from the equipment.
Our crews were able to get in and out in only five days. No matter the time, or location SERVPRO of Southwest Portland is here for the city of Portland 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Costly Home Damage-Dyer Fire
2/7/2022 (Permalink)
An electric or gas clothes dryer is nearly an essential part of life in most homes. In families with children, the laundry can seem a daunting task, going on forever with washing machines and dryers churning and turning away slowly at a never-ending mountain of laundry.
But, all that convenience carries with it the possibility of a deadly hazard -- a dryer fire -- the leading cause of home fires in this country at the rate of about 15,000 every year.
*Don't dry dangerously*
While today's clothes dryer is in itself a safe piece of machinery and a feat of modern technology, it isn't fail-safe and requires regular preventive maintenance to prevent fires that could start in your lint trap or anywhere within your dryer's venting.
When lint traps aren't cleaned as often as they should be, the resulting build-up in the screen or other areas can cause the dryer to perform poorly, operate at elevated temperatures and possibly overheat -- with dangerous consequences. Vent systems must also be checked and cleaned to maintain proper air flow for the same reasons.
Problems may also occur if consumers place improper items in their dryers, such as foam backed rugs or athletic shoes, or vent their appliances with plastic or vinyl exhaust materials. Make sure that whatever you put in your dryer is approved and safe to place in a dryer. When in doubt, check the washing instructions on the tag of the clothing or consult the manufacturers website for more information.

If you experience a fire loss we are just a call away and we are ready to help!
SERVPRO of Southwest Portland received a call early in the morning regarding a massive fire loss. The homeowner called and alerted us that earlier this morning the fire department said the fire started in the basement near the ironing board. They had a power outage and then the fire started shortly after.
Within 10 minutes of that call ends, we sent out our crews to the home. Once our crew arrived they had the initial walkthrough with the homeowner and it was very apparent that the furniture has carcinogens in it and we advised our crew to not breathe it in. The fire also burnt multiple holes in the floor of the home./Our crew luckily packed respirator masks to ensure that they wouldn’t breathe it in.
The first thing our crew needed to do was secure the property which required gating around the outside of the home. Once that was finished our crew begin to board up all the windows affected by the fire. The next problem our crew had to be concerned about was the 10 inches of standing water in the crawl space.
Here at SERVPRO, we understand what can come from comradery and teamwork with that being said we have a great relationship with a third party. That relationship is so strong they were able to come out and assist us with extracting the standing water.

Neighbors problem turned into your problem

It may be someone else fault but no matter the case SERVPRO of Southwest Portland is here to help!
SERVPRO of Southwest Portland received a call regarding a fire loss. The homeowner explained to us that the neighbor’s trash can caught on fire and now has smoke damage on his patio and inside his home that needs cleaning. Within 10 minutes of the call ending the crew loaded up the truck and headed out to the loss.
Once we arrived the crew chief went with the homeowner on an initial walk-through to see the soot damage inside the house and on the porch. After that initial walkthrough, the next step of the process is coming up with a drying plan. Performing “cleaning” in a fire damage restoration means removing smoke residues and deodorizing smoke odors. Fire damages present great cleaning challenges due to the many ways that, heat, oxygen, moisture, and gas interact to form smoke residues.
The cleaning plan was simple to find all the residues in the house and then identify the type of residue. Once the residue is identified we will then remove it and properly dispose of it then our crew brought in dry sponges to clean smoke residues from the affected surfaces. Dry cleaning is the safest method to use on unfinished wood surfaces to avoid moisture setting residues into the porous wood.
Here at SERVPRO of Southwest Portland, we make sure to make your home or business look just as good as new or how we like to say “Like it never even happened." Local bank has huge fire loss
12/6/2021 (Permalink)
Results of the attempt to steal ATM
SERVPRO of Southwest Portland received a very shocking call regarding a huge fire loss at a local bank. The owner called us early the next morning to explain that individuals attempted to steal the atm out of the front lobby. We were told they had a blow torch in an attempt to steal the atm. The local firefighters were alerted and the owner believes that is what saved the atm from being completely removed.
Within an hour of receiving the call, we sent our well-trained crew that is prepared for all kinds of jobs, out to arrive on the scene ready to work. During the initial walk though it was obvious that the front lobby was going to need a lot of work in addition to the room behind the lobby and the restroom in the room behind the lobby. Our amazing crew chief came up with an amazing plan in order to get the bank back up and running as soon as possible.
The plan was to remove all insulation needed to be removed, the T-grid, and the light fixture will need to be removed and replaced. There was a really bad smoke odor throughout the bank as well. Our crew scrubbed the floors, washed the windows, did extra heavy cleaning for the bathroom, and cleaned any of the additional contents and hardware the owner asked for. Once all the ducting and pipes were out that were exposed to the soot then our crew fogged the entire building on the way out.
For those of you that don’t know what “fogging a room is.” It is a disinfectant spray that comes from a fogging machine to create what looks like fog. It’s a very effective way to disinfect high levels of horizontal surfaces and hard-to-reach areas that are often missed or forgotten. Fogging was perfect for this job due to the height of the ceilings in the bank.

Cleaning a soot filled kitchen.
Not every fire does an immense amount of damage to homes. In fact many fires don’t require a large amount of demolition and rebuild; especially ones caused by cooking accidents. Grease fires, protein fires, contained fires or outdoor fires can all do a small amount of damage to homes but they can produce a lot more smoke and residue than people realize.
That smoke, soot, and residue will go throughout your home covering all kinds of surfaces like walls, counter-tops, cabinets, contents, and clothes. The smoke damage leaves behind sticky residue, stains surfaces, odors, and can be toxic to breath long term especially for people with respiratory issues. The residue is not always visible either so the testing process is very important.
A home does not need to be severely damaged after a fire for you to call one of our experts for a free inspection of your home. The size and scope of damage after a small fire can be very surprising to many people when we do our inspection and show how far reaching smoke damage can be and what all is affected. In our inspection we use various cleaning tools and chemicals (made by our chemists at SERVPRO) to determine the best way to restore your home to its before fire condition.
What goes into a Fire Cleaning and Restoration Project?
Projects vary based on a variety of factors such as:
- Size and scope of the damage
- Source of the fire
- Odor level
- Type of materials affected
To get a good idea of what is necessary for your particular situation it is best to give us a call and schedule a free inspection and estimate to determine what processes are best suited to restore your home. Typically many of our fire restoration projects include:
- Board Up
- Dry cleaning with a sponge or HEPA vacuum
- Wet cleaning with solutions or enzymes
- Ozone treatment for odor
- Thermal for odor
- Content pack-out for off site cleaning (more severe fire damage situation)
- Duct cleaning
We deal with fires all year around and we are ready to help you take back your home after fire. Make sure you review these fire damage tips and give us a call today for an inspection today at 503-777-9739

Large Fire Loss

SERVPRO ready when you need them.
This is a picture of a Fire/Water Damage we completed a few short moths ago from a cooking incident on the third story of an apartment complex in the Portland Metro area. This is just one of MANY photos taken at this loss, but this shows a little of the damage received from the water used to put out the fire. Approximately the entire complex was affected--27 units, therefore, this is what we call a Large Loss. As for the fire damage, we had to remove a significant amount of insulation, soot had to be cleaned throughout two levels of hallways, stairwells as well as some units. After intense cleaning and mitigation, we ended with giving all affected areas a carpet cleaning and a well needed duct cleaning to make things "Like it never even happened."
Fire Damage in the kitchen.
1/4/2021 (Permalink)
Be careful when working in the kitchen.
Here we see the aftermath of a kitchen. A oven mitt was left to close to the stove while a pot of water was left to boil. The homeowner had walked away thinking they had some time before it would boil. What they did not notice was the oven mitt they had left to close to the open flame which then ignited. Before they could contain it the fire took over the entire kitchen leaving them with no choice but to evacuate and wait for fire fighters. After the fire was put out this was the result of the corner of the kitchen where the refrigerator was located. SERVPRO of Southwest Portland was called upon to cleanup the extreme damage the fire left behind. The entire kitchen was gutted and the whole house needed to be treated for smoke damage. Once this was completed the restoration process could begin.

Wildfires 2020

Wildfires in Mill city devastated town.
SERVPRO of Southwest Portland has sent crews to rural areas to set air filtration devices and help clean smoke damaged homes and businesses. Neighborhoods were devastated with only a few homes left on the street. The people we met with were very happy to see us and saw us as a hope to return to their homes. To be of service to these hard hit communities is an honor. Debi and I were able to go from home to home to deliver air filtration devices to start cleaning the air, make sketches and sign the documents to get the homes ready to be cleaned and to document with pictures for the Insurance adjusters. It is an honor to be able to serve in these hard hit communities.
Air Filtration Devices Can Help Remove Soot & Smoke
9/16/2020 (Permalink)
XL Air Filtration Device supplied by SERVPRO
Portable Air Filtration Devices in your home or at your business can help remove particulates from your indoor air that can affect human health. Some of these pollutants come from outdoors, and others come from indoor sources and activities, such as cooking, cleaning, secondhand smoke, building materials, consumer products, and home furnishings. These indoor air pollutants can be particles or gases, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Common contaminants that can be found indoors include particulate matter (including PM2.5 [fine] and PM10 [coarse]), formaldehyde, mold, and pollen. Since most people spend about 90% of their time indoors, the most effective ways to improve your indoor air are to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate with clean outdoor air. In addition, research shows that filtration can be an effective supplement to source control and ventilation. Using a portable air cleaner can help to improve indoor air quality. Portable air cleaners, also known as air purifiers or air sanitizers, are designed to filter the air in a single room or area. Portable air cleaners can reduce indoor air pollution.

High Rise Fire. SERVPRO called to mitigate.
Terwilliger Plaza has trusted SERVPRO of Southwest Portland to meet the needs of their residents when they have fire and water damages. A fire set off the water sprinklers at Terwilliger Plaza and flooded three floors of the building. SERVPRO of Southwest Portland was able to bring in their crews and start mitigating the damages within an hour of being called out. Other than having to remove some of the carpet and a small bit of the drywall we were able to save the building and not have to move the residents out.
The management of Terwilliger Plaza is great to work with and we are creating an Emergency Ready Plan for them that will show all of the shutoffs for water, gas and electricity and will give all of the local emergency numbers.
Hotel Fire
2/11/2020 (Permalink)
Hotel three room fire
Three rooms in the corner area of this hotel burnt from the inside out a couple weeks ago over a weekend. SERVPRO of Southwest Portland was there within an hour getting pictures of the damage and measuring the scope of the project. The fire marshal was onsite giving us the go ahead for measurements and pictures around the property. The fire spread so quickly that in a short amount of time, three rooms were burnt on the inside with just the majority of the structure still standing. We are able to go in and clean soot damage and do debris cleanup in the affected units as well as the surrounding ones from the pungent smoke smells. Even though some of the structure will need to be demolished and rebuilt, we can help with the areas and items that need to be ozoned.
Front Porch Fire
2/11/2020 (Permalink)
Insulation damage in attic/crawlspace
A car battery charging on this customers front porch combusted and set the structure on fire. The fire went up through the attic that hangs over the porch, into the front room, and kitchen areas. The house needed to be completely gutted due to heavy smoke damage throughout. The debris all over was picked up and the damaged insulation was extracted from the attic and crawlspace. The ceiling eventually was removed to start the rebuild. There was no one home at the time so everyone was safe from the rapid moving flames. We were out to the property within an hour to board up any areas that were at risk for weather and vandalism before we were able to start on the rest of the fire damage cleanup and salvage.
Stove Fire
1/9/2020 (Permalink)
Stove fire caused by grease
Grease fires in our kitchens can happen at any time. It is important to keep the stove and surrounding areas clean from any hazardous material. This small kitchen fire happened quickly due to grease under one of the back burners that burst into flames. This customer has to follow the fire cleanup with demolition of the hood vent, a portion of the ceiling, cabinets, and a stove replacement. Since a kitchen grease fire can happen to anyone it is important to know some simple precautions, if you experience one of your own. If cooking with a pot or a pan when the fire occurs, it is safer to leave the pot on the stove, and not try and transport it outside to a different area. Also, remember not to pour water onto a grease fire. It is safer to smother or cover the flames, if they are still manageable.
Small Fire, Not So Small Damage.
1/7/2020 (Permalink)
Fire and smoke residue in apartment kitchen
What started out as a small fire, quickly spread into other parts and floors in this apartment unit. There was broken glass, smoke damage, and structural damage after the fire department came to put out the flames. The smoke damage was heavier on the kitchen walls and ceiling, but around the house, you could find other soot residues that were in need of cleaning up! The fire started near the kitchen window of the apartment unit and spread across the flooring and ceiling in that room. There was heavy floor damage in front of the stove across from the kitchen window as well as some smoke damage in the attached living room. After the windows, floors, and ceilings were replaced, this unit looked like nothing ever happened!
Outside Fire
1/7/2020 (Permalink)
A small fire on the outside of a house.
Luckily for this customer, this fire was extinguished before it caused any major structural damage. Taking into consideration the location of the fire, it would have easily moved from different parts of the house, including underneath it. Every job that we are called out to is a new experience is different, no two losses are the same, and a different approach must be made every time. SERVPRO of Southwest Portland was able to catch the fire before any major disaster happened, and we cleaned up the mess surrounding the area. This may look like a small job, but we are always willing to help no matter the size. Before compromising the home from under the deck, the customer was able to put it out. We came in to make sure no further damage was done and had gone unseen.
Garage Fire
1/3/2020 (Permalink)
This is the front of the house which had a garage fire.
A fire that started in the garage and then came through the house caused extensive damage to this family home. SERVPRO of Southwest Portland worked closely with an electrician on this project due to a lot of damaged wires throughout the garage and the house. We were able to go into the home and get everything that was salvageable packed up and had to clear out the items that were non-salvageable as well. Since the location of the start of the fire was close to basement rooms that were fully furnished, this process was slightly more challenging and time-consuming to go through salvageable and non-salvageable items. Although our customer suffered a tremendous loss, we were there to help with all their needs and we have fully restored their home back to preloss condition.
Local Bar Fire
1/3/2020 (Permalink)
Front of structure for the bar
What started as a small kitchen fire on their flat top grill, this structure quickly went up in flames compromising the majority of the building. SERVPRO of Southwest Portland came to pack out the interior of the bar and began cleaning the structure and anything else that could be salvaged. This historical fixture is slated to reopen soon in the heart of Multnomah Village after an extensive renovation. With the reopening, customers in the area will see a newly updated neighborhood bar and grill featuring their brand new rooftop bar. We take pride in our community and we knew how important this was that we got this local hangout spot back up and running as quickly as we possibly could. Welcome back to the neighborhood Renner's Grill!
MAACO Collision Center Fire

Cause of fire in MAACO garage
SERVPRO of Southwest Portland was called out to a fire that tore through a collision shop and destroyed the interior and exterior of the structure, cars, and belongings. As the damage was sorted through, there were a few items that we were able to restore to preloss condition. We went through garages, offices, and hallways, and replaced what we could to get the business up and running smoothly again. Looking back at the pictures of how devastating this fire once was, the after pictures make it look "Like it never even happened." With professional cleaning and a crew of certified fire/smoke individuals, this MAACO suffered a tragic and sudden loss and we were there to help! Please call SERVPRO of Southwest Portland for all your Fire, Water, Mold and Bio-hazard cleanups.
Fire On Front Porch
1/2/2020 (Permalink)
Front of house
We were called out to this fire job from the property management company. They had a fire on the front porch that damaged walls, flooring, the ceiling, and the attic as well as multiple rooms. The most damage occurred in the attic space where our crew had to clean out a lot of insulation and damaged wood in the structure. It is not always apparent what damage has happened due to smoke residues. For this specific loss, we also had to remove carpet pads in multiple rooms because of the fire and smoke damage. Since this was a rental property, it was our main goal to get the job done promptly so the house could be ready for new tenants to move in. Please call us at 503-777-9739

Portland Oregon Smoke and Soot Cleanup
7/19/2017 (Permalink)
Portland Oregon soot damage cleaning in progress
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Portland will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
Our Fire Damage Restoration Services
Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.
