SERVPRO of Southwest Portland knows that pacific northwest winters are a serious matter. Whether it’s snow, rain, cold temperatures, or even icy roads. That runs is into our home to instantly turn on the heater or possibly throw a log in the fire to stay warm and relax during the wintertime. We want to go over some do’s or don’t to do during the winter times with potential things that could go wrong during the winter.
Fire and Smoke Damage
Do’s
- If heat is off during the winter, pour RV antifreeze in your sinks, toilet bowls, holding tanks, and tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures
- Wash both sides of leaves on house plants
- Change your HVAC filter, but leave the system off until a trained professional can check out the system.
- Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles from soot getting in our of the HVAC system.
- If you happen to lose electricity, empty your freezer and refrigerator completely and prop the door open to help prevent odor,
Dont’s
- Consume any food or beverages that may have been stored close to fire, heat, or water due to the potential of them possibly being contaminated.
- Let your fire get out of control that could possibly turn into a fire loss in addition to having the heat on in your home overnight especially if vents are close to contents
